  1. I was one of them – my guess is that many didn’t realise we were still eligible to apply this year…

  2. Yes, 3000 UK 18-year-olds are eligible to get on a train around Europe for up to 30 days in a 1 year period. They will still be subject to all COVID restrictions, including any quarantine period that may be required.

    Next year that disappears.

For reference, there are 715,000 18-year-olds in the UK. And the age only differs because of how long it’s taken to organise this year’s with COVID, etc. And there’s no telling that they’ll actually take up the offer or how many do.

Though it’s a great thing if you’re lucky enough to be able to utilise it (i.e. you are an 18-year-old who can just spend a month travelling around the EU, feeding yourself, etc.), we’d have been far better off expanding this enormously and incredibly so that the numbers weren’t quite so pathetic, or just doing something else entirely – like lowering their loans, tuition fees, living expenses etc. somehow. Or keeping child trust funds.
