A Poem for Earth Day by Lucia Urreta

Lucia Urreta :
Youth. Climate. Activist.
three words you might have heard
countless times,
whether it be in the news,
or the words of politicians.
but what do they mean?
first, ask the
Youth.
i have been here for only seventeen
years,
and do not yet comprehend what the
world means.
my mind is open, moldable,
yet firm in its ideals.
there are decades i have not lived,
and people i have not met.
this novelty drives me to hard work,
to fight for our
Climate
which has been warming before you were
born.
fires and floods destroying homes,
new refugees every day,
countries disappearing.
Our earth is changing
going under a painful transformation,
black oil seeping through like a cancer in
the oceans,
noxious gases permeating the air like
chemical weapons.
it may seem dark,
but there is optimism in the words of the
Activist
who spends so many hours,
organizing.
creating change through action.
through hard work and hoping,
petitioning and protesting.
we question the systems in which we
belong,
and demand their evolution towards
equity,
justice,
love
not only for the planet,
but for all who live on it. (Part 1/2)
